“The Diamond State” Vs “The First State”

Former President Thomas Jefferson gave Delaware the nickname the “Jewel state” because he described Delaware as a "jewel" among states due to its strategic location on the Eastern Seaboard. On the other hand, on 7 December 1787, Delaware became the first of the 13 original states to ratify the U.S. Constitution. It is with this that on May 23, 2002, following a request by Mrs. Anabelle O'Malley's, a First Grade Class student at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School Delaware became known nicknamed as “The First State”.
